細胞質中に浮いて存在しているものと、小胞体の膜上に結合して（粗面小胞体）いるものとがあります。細胞質中のリボソームは細胞質に局在するタンパク質合成を司ります。粗面小胞体上のリボソームは、合成されたタンパク質が粗面小胞体の内部の空間に放出され、ゴルジ体などでの化学修飾を受けたのちに細胞外に分泌されたりします。
